Planners Comments.

Thank you all for coming. I think we were very fortunate to have St Leonards at a time when the undergrowth has only just started growing and the worst of the mud has dried out a bit. The encouragement from the Forestry Commission to allow us to park on the middle of the forest made planning a whole lot easier. It meant I could use the best part of the forest with shorts walks to the start and from the finish. The Yellow and Orange were straightforward to plan because of the path network. I managed to get both Green and Blue into the fiddly old iron ore mining areas in the north. Julia gave me some helpful tweaks especially the avoidance of a long run back on the Green. By the look of Routegadget there was enough route choice. Particularly pleasing was the 15-16 leg on Blue where there appear to have been 3 distinct choices and many variations of those.

The Blue was slightly shorter than advertise due to a late change on Friday evening. Control 10 on Blue was meant to be further north. After placing the kite I was asked by the local resident to move it as it was on his land which he said had been sold to him by the Forestry Commission 20 years ago. I had no evidence to doubt this. A quick recce for another suitable control site (a very large knoll), a dash back home to logon to Purple Pen, create and print off 50 map segments, make use of scissors and Pritt Stick and the map was ready to go.

I was very concerned about mixing the normal dog walkers, bikers and horse riders with cars. This all went very smoothly. Thank you to every driver who made that go without a hitch.

Thanks also to:

Mole Valley for allowing us to use the area and their map

Forest Commission for giving permission and for allowing us to park in the forest.

All the helpers from SO: Andy, Jannion, Penny, David, Marion, Bridget, Julia, Julie, Richard, Chris, Barry, Pete, the SI team, Karen, Mike.

SOG Series Info

SOGs are friendly club events where children and newcomers are very welcome. Yellow and Orange courses are suitable for children to run on their own with a bit of practice. Adults are welcome to shadow children until they are confident to go on their own. Green and Blue courses are run or walked by any age group - you can race competitively or just enjoy the woodland.

There are two series of events - autumn and spring of approximately 8 events each. Electronic timing (SI) is used.

Help on the day always appreciated.
