Report

Well, the weather came good for 10.00. Just me who got wet early morning ! Comments were generally positive, but apologies for the rather too shallow depression at 92 - a Covid strike meant I hadn’t checked this site before committing to it. And the Western fence 82 was a bit too well camouflaged by the undergrowth. Fast winning times on Blue and Green with some easy running terrain and few brambles to slow them down. I thought siting the Start flag 50m beyond the Start would take runners on Blue and Green more out of sight of the Start, but not to be – most just headed off from the Start grid on a vague bearing. The late change to parking was caused by the Estate withdrawing permission for verge parking – and I had only phoned them to check that the gate would be open. Fortunately Mike was able to set up the Hill Barn parking with the farmer. Sorry to hear that some of you had difficult journeys due to road closures. To rub salt, I drove the A27 Westbound the previous Sunday afternoon and went North from the Shoreham flyover past Steyning to the A24 without ant holdup, just an extra 15 minutes on the journey. A 3rd weekend closure next weekend. Many thanks to all the helpers who allowed the event to go smoothly : Clive Hawkes and Alan Williamson on parking, Di Turner on Start, Mike Turner on ‘Help’, The SI team of Penny, Mike and Joe. And a great team of control collectors in Dave Cummins, Alan Velecky, Rob Lines and Gary Greenstreet who allowed a wrap-up in good time to get home for the rugby. And to Mike Gammon for checking my courses and map printing.

RouteGadget

Is a web app for sharing and comparing orienteering routes. You can draw your own route or upload a GPS track from your watch. It also allows you to watch an animated replay with a simulated mass start.

SOG Series Info

SOGs are friendly club events where children and newcomers are very welcome. Yellow and Orange courses are suitable for children to run on their own with a bit of practice. Adults are welcome to shadow children until they are confident to go on their own. Green and Blue courses are run or walked by any age group - you can race competitively or just enjoy the woodland.

There are two series of events - autumn and spring of approximately 8 events each. Electronic timing (SI) is used.

Help on the day always appreciated.

* Postcodes are not very precise in some areas, so don't rely on them for an exact location.

Directions / Parking

Directions and Parking 1 mile East of A27 Crossbush junction, turn N onto Blakehurst Lane for 1 mile, then Right onto estate access track. From the E you can turn across the A27 direct in to Blakehurst lane – but beware, there are 2 adjacent crossings and you want the W-most. Parking to side of main track. Start access from head of car line.

Please note that the A27 will be closed westbound between the Old Shoreham Road junction and Hoe Court from 8pm on Friday 17th until 6am on Monday 20th March, and so if you are travelling to the event from the east you are advised to seek out an alternative route.
