Planners Comments

Having planned at Slindon during the same time of year for the past 3 years I always wondered if the location has enough on the ground for it to be a challenge for competitors. I happy to say the comments I received from competitors I did achieve in my planning to give you courses with enough route selection to make it stimulating to come back for more. One observation on the blue course that controls 6 and 9 were north and south of each other and caused a few competitors to go to 9 before 6. I will keep this in mind when I plan my next event. One vehicle had to be pushed out of its parking bay by a few of us, which left a skid channel, which I tried to fill in.
It was great to see so many non-club juniors from the scout and cubs taking part and parents getting their direction so wrong because they wouldn't listen to their responsibilities they were escorting.
Many thanks to the Scout Active Support team for their parking control, could do with them at every event. SI team leads Les Coles and aided by Anna Chapman, Joe Barrett and Mike Ralph. Start team of Ray, Sophie, James Kingdom and Penny Parker. EOD Lyn Phillips and Vikki Sampson. Control collectors, Jill and Steve Blunt, Ed Cox, Robin Smith SOC and Chris Pritchett WIGHTO

Cubs and Scouts Event Comments and Results

This was our largest ever entry for this district event 28 cubs teams from five packs (1st Birdham and Witterings, 5th Chichester, 12th Chichester, Funtington and West Stoke and 1st Southbourne, and 8 scout teams from three troops (12th Chichester, Funtington and West Stoke and 1st Southbourne Sea Scouts) (Two junior teams and six senior teams)

The cubs did the orange course but with the benefit, perhaps, of an adult keeping an eye on them!

Adding on the Southdowns Orienteers entries, there were 146 entries in total.

The actual cubs and scouts taking part it was 97! This ignores any parents.

The top places in each section were:-

Cubs (orange)

1st 12th Chichester 24m 18 sec

Scouts Under 12 (yellow)

1st 12th Chichester 24m 29 sec

Scouts - Under 14 (orange)

1st 1st Southbourne 21m 58 sec

Thanks to Scout Active Support for car parking Alfie, Philip, Karen, Derek and Mike, to Sue for supplying tea and coffee, to George Barrett for crowd control at the start and to Suzanne Barrett for helping me with the administration.

Finally a big thank you to Southdowns Orienteers for getting land permission and for letting us use their courses and in particular the planner Ralph Phillips who planned the courses and was out at the crack of dawn putting them out when most of you were still in bed and the computer (SI) team.

SOG Series Info

SOGs are friendly club events where children and newcomers are very welcome. Yellow and Orange courses are suitable for children to run on their own with a bit of practice. Adults are welcome to shadow children until they are confident to go on their own. Green and Blue courses are run or walked by any age group - you can race competitively or just enjoy the woodland.

There are two series of events - autumn and spring of approximately 8 events each. Electronic timing (SI) is used.

Help on the day always appreciated.
