Report

Thank you all for coming today and I hope you enjoyed this new area which I stumbled across during the 'lockdown' years! I received plenty of positive feedback so we might well be returning in the future! Times were about as expected which was a relief as it can be difficult to estimate suitable distances in a new area.

As always this event couldn't have taken place without a team of volunteers working in the background so I would like to thank the following:

Steve J for course checking, Joe and Samantha for SI support, Darren, Alan and Garry for control collecting, Karen for the risk assessment and for setting up the popular trail-o course to keep you entertained after your run (thanks to Jane and the Johnson family for helping Karen to tidy this away), and Bea, Jenny and Anna for sorting the AGM and looking after the Hub room that we used.

Chris H

Pre event info

Junior warm up session 10:15 to 10:30

We will be running a junior warm up session from 10:15 to 10:30. Juniors are anyone under 20. Do come and join us. It's a chance to warm up the muscles and have a bit of fun, before your run. Find Anna by the junior squad banner.

After your run and before the Prizegiving & AGM, have a go at Intro to Trail O

This is a great way to really understand the map and the features on it. There will be a series of controls placed on features and you have to decide which controls are marked on a series of maps. Find Karen by the coaching flag.

AGM and Prizegiving at 12:30

The AGM is open to all and includes the annual award of adult and junior trophies, as well as certificates for the Autumn SOG series. Do come along and show your support.

Park O Series Info

Park-Os are friendly club events, usually in parks or school grounds, where children and newcomers are very welcome. These are fun events where you can get a feeling for the sport – you can walk or run, go as a group or on your own or challenge your navigation at high speed against some of our top competitive orienteers. Yellow and Orange courses are suitable for children to walk or run on their own with a bit of practice. Adults are welcome to shadow children until they are confident to go on their own. Sprint courses are run or walked by any age group.

The Park-O series takes place in the early summer and early Autumn and is 8 events this year. Medals are awarded for the best placed in a variety of age categories.

Terrain Description

This is a revamped park in a new estate built on the site of an old asylum (Hellingly Hospital). The park itself used to be the sports grounds and open space for the hospital staff. The local council are very keen to promote this public space, so a lot of work is being done to make it look great! You will find a gently sloping park with open and wooded areas along with 2 ponds. There is a good path network along with various play areas, a community allotment and a cricket pitch, and a community orchard has recently been planted. As you run around you may also spot relics from the old hospital.
The AGM will be held afterwards in the Hellingly Community Hub building.

Dog restrictions

Dogs must be kept under control.

Facilities

Bring your own water. Toilets and water available in Hub building when it is opened at 11:30am but probably not before then.

Miscellaneous

It will be ok to wear shorts for this event.

Bring your own water as the hub won’t be open until later.
There will be a Trail-O alongside this event which everyone is welcome to come and try.
The club AGM will follow this event in the Hub building once everyone has completed their run.
