What a difference a week makes! From dodging the heavy rain at Bedelands to a fine sunny day, but not too hot for running. My thanks to all those who helped, Rob as controller, Gail and Marky as start officials, the SI team as ever, but especially to those who appeared to help with the clear-up afterwards. Their efforts mean that we managed to top Alan Velecky's record of all put away at 1220 by 3 minutes!
Brooklands Park is quite a complex area, thanks to its history as a former golf course, and navigation is not trivial. The problem for a course planner is that it's quite small, so to fit in the required lengths of courses, frequent sharp changes of direction are needed but without duplication of terrain to be crossed. The problem for mappers is that positions of benches and bins need updating often, with last-minute amendments put in. The problem for competitors is that the council mowing gang get artistic and create 'interesting' new paths - I hope no-one was confused by the concentric rings which appeared in the south of the Park.
But anyway, favourable remarks from competitors afterwards suggest that all the difficulties were overcome, and that it was an enjoyable morning.

Park O Series Info
Park-Os are friendly club events, usually in parks or school grounds, where children and newcomers are very welcome. These are fun events where you can get a feeling for the sport – you can walk or run, go as a group or on your own or challenge your navigation at high speed against some of our top competitive orienteers. Yellow and Orange courses are suitable for children to walk or run on their own with a bit of practice. Adults are welcome to shadow children until they are confident to go on their own. Sprint courses are run or walked by any age group.
The Park-O series takes place in the early summer and early Autumn and is 8 events this year. Medals are awarded for the best placed in a variety of age categories.

Terrain Description
Intricate and varied mix of ornamental gardens, open, rough open and copse.. Many small paths and some intricate contour detail. The area presents a significant navigational challenge for runners to stay in touch with the map at speed.
There are water features in the area including a large lake and a marshy stream which are uncrossable and unsafe to enter.
The Sprint course crosses a minor access road twice (controls 11-12 and 15-16). It’s not busy but drivers may be concentrating on parking and turning, not on orienteers!.
Courses are planned not to cross the main car park area which should in any case be avoided.

Well-behaved dogs on a lead are allowed.
