Thank you all for coming to sunny Brooklands, which I hope you’ll agree has a lot to offer as a Park-O venue. Even at 1:4000 scale there’s a lot happening on the map, with a plethora of benches, paths, thickets, individual trees, watercourses, and even windmills! Plus some interesting humps and bumps on the southern part from its former incarnation as a golf course. On the Sprint course I aimed to stretch your legs on the first half with some long legs and route choice (I think north or south round the lake were pretty similar time wise), and to stretch your minds on the second half with a series of short legs in and out of the detailed bits. Possibly some minds were stretched to breaking point judging by a few missed controls and mispunches in this section!
I’d like to thank Chris Hooker for course reviewing and map updates, Karen Ashworth for her input from a safety perspective, the amazing SI team (Joe, Les, Jane and Samantha), and the endlessly energetic control collectors (Peter, Euan, Garry and Darren). We were packed up with all controls collected by 12.20, which might be a record (not that I’m competitive or anything!)
If you have a moment, please upload your route to Routegadget – always nice to see the choices people make!

Park O Series Info
Park-Os are friendly club events, usually in parks or school grounds, where children and newcomers are very welcome. These are fun events where you can get a feeling for the sport – you can walk or run, go as a group or on your own or challenge your navigation at high speed against some of our top competitive orienteers. Yellow and Orange courses are suitable for children to walk or run on their own with a bit of practice. Adults are welcome to shadow children until they are confident to go on their own. Sprint courses are run or walked by any age group.
The Park-O series takes place in the early summer and early Autumn and is 8 events this year. Medals are awarded for the best placed in a variety of age categories.

Map Details
Scale 1:4,000, 2.5m contours, updated to June 2025
Terrain Description
Intricate and varied mix of ornamental gardens, open, rough open and copse, including a rewilded golf course. Many small paths and some intricate contour detail. The area presents a significant navigational challenge for runners to stay in touch with the map at speed.
There are water features in the area including a large lake and a marshy stream which are uncrossable and unsafe to enter.
The Sprint and Orange courses cross a minor road twice (immediately after the start on the Orange and on 3-4, and on 6-7 and 8-9 on the Sprint). It’s not busy but may have some slow moving cars. Please ensure juniors on these courses are aware of this fact and of the need to take care.
The main parking area is marked out of bounds on the map, but Sprint competitors will pass close by (exactly where will depend on the route chosen). Please be aware of moving cars as you pass by the parking area, particularly if you choose to cross the entrance to the park from the main road.
Dog restrictions
Well behaved dogs allowed on courses, please keep under control, and pick up after them
Facilities
Excellent new cafe, toilets, play park, picnic tables, ice creams.
Assembly is adjacent to the car park, start is 100m north of assembly, route will be taped.
