Many thanks to you all for coming along to the first KNC of the new decade. I hope the addition of triplets provided a challenge and change to the usual “score” format. Congratulations to Stan for getting all the controls and bonus points possible in a terrific time of 58.49.

First lady was Scarlet and special mention must go to Tommy who could only complete the golf course controls but did so (and got all the bonuses) in just over 33 minutes.

Huge thanks go to everyone who made the event possible: Joe Barrett who provided the SI and came up with a way of producing the results so efficiently; Chris, Paul, Neil, Sue, Will, Stan, Scarlet and Tommy for control collecting; Mike Gammon for map printing and Karen for help with the Risk Assessment. In addition I must make a special mention of the help provided by Neil, for all his patience, guidance and assistance with everything – many thanks Neil.

The Kent Night Cup (KNC) is series of weekly events, on Thursday evenings, organised by our neighbours Saxons with input from SO, DFOK and Mole Valley. There is a mix of forest and street events so if you now have a taste for more night-time fun, check out their website https://www.saxons-oc.org/events.

SONiC Series Info

SONiCs are events held during the evening hours of darkness and take place either around streets or in parks/woods. They are score events where you get an hour to visit as many controls as you can, with everyone starting at the same time. For insurance purposes juniors under the age (actual age) of 16 are not allowed to compete in street events unaccompanied. For the street events a small torch is helpful to read the map. For forest events a stronger (head)torch is recommended.

10 points per control

extra 10 points for three ascending controls in sequence, e.g. 80,81,82 = 40 pts

You cannot visit a control more than once and a given control can't count in more than one sequence e.g. 80,81,82,83,84,86 = 70 points, 80,81,82,83,84,85 = 80 points. A pen might prove useful as an aide-memoire for marking controls visited! Max points 210 + 70 = 280.

Half the controls are on the golf course and half on the neighbouring streets. No unaccompanied under 16s (on the day of the event) are allowed to visit the street controls. Hi-Vis clothing is highly recommended (and compulsory for U18s).
