Planners Comments

A first visit to Broadfield in early December with Will showed that it could be a really good sprint orienteering area, although with so many ways through it would be tricky to set long route choice legs. It was going to be more about quick navigation and keeping track of which alley you were in.
In an ideal world, I could have put controls anywhere I wanted to make the best use of the building shapes and twisty alleys, but I was always very aware that these are people’s homes and I sited all controls in the more public areas and away from people’s front doors. There also had to be something to gripple them to!
It was only sensible to make use of the experienced international sprint orienteer in the family, so thanks to Jonathan for his input and also to Neil for answering all of my various technical questions despite mapping and planning the Worth event on the same day.
Will put a huge amount of effort into this, both in producing the map from scratch and in organising and special thanks to Simon Errington for his controlling and on the day calmness and if any of you found the alleyways of Broadfield to be confusing I would just say that driving around the roads is much worse!

Organisers comments

Thanks to all the athletes for coming along to this GB junior sprint selection race. I hope you all enjoyed your run and have taken some positivity away, regardless of the result.

We only had two months to pull this event together and could have gone for a much simpler sprint on an existing SO urban map. However I’d long wanted to map Broadfield as I felt it had good potential and this sprint gave me the perfect excuse. Thanks to Pippa Archer for trusting us to deliver an event worthy of the athletes and GB selection.
There’s a long list of thank you’s and I’m going to go for it because they all deserve a mention. Even in its simplest form, orienteering events require a massive volunteer contribution.
Mapping was brilliant fun, very time consuming when I should have been working, but made much easier by good advice from Neil Crickmore and mapping of all the vegetation by Euan Marsh.
Sue Crickmore was an easy choice as planner given her experience as a top level planner/controller. There were more considerations than you could imagine when it came to planning in Broadfield. Thanks for the excellent courses Sue.
Big thank you to Simon Errington (HH) for his super helpful suggestions and his creative approach. We felt in safe hands.
Peter Chapman (SO) for getting final permission from Crawley Borough Council to run the event.
Karen Ashworth (SO) for her meticulous starting point Risk Assessment.
Pete Tryner (SYO) for saying yes to everything. ‘Can we use your controls, kites, stakes? Can you run the SI? Can you sort out the start lists? And the results?’
Alan and Maddie (SO) for providing the van at the heart of our assembly area and registration. And a nice cup of coffee.
Pre runners – Kirsten, Roger, Sarah and Ant. Not bad times as well 😊
Marshalls – Roger, Sarah, Stan, Ant and Simon. I felt comfortable that we had so many marshalls out on course to keep an eye on the runners and also the public.
Mark and Alice on the start. One job on the day that I knew was in safe hands and didn’t need to worry about.
Nick Lightfoot on the finish, counting the heads coming back in.

Kate Turner and Peter Chapman on parking and India Brooker making sure no-one headed out onto the pristine turf of Crawley FC!

Top notch photos from Claire and Ed. Great to have these.

Crawley Town FC. Perfect venue – couldn’t really have done it without their help.
BML for all the lovely maps.
Crawley Borough Council for giving us permission to run in the area.

Thank you parents for bringing your juniors this far south. I’m sorry we had to keep you all away from the start and finish areas. This was a sensitive residential area early on a Sunday morning and we were keen to keep the residents on side with no shouting at the finish! Ordinarily I wouldn’t have an issue with this.

Finally thanks to all those others that offered to help before and on the day.
