- SO triumph at UK's first civilian Biathlon Orienteering competition
SO members won five medals at the Biathlon Orienteering competition held at JK2025 in Sheffield over Easter. Anna Chapman won Gold and Jane Lambert won silver in W50+. Peter Chapman won silver in M50+. Ben Chapman won bronze in M16- and Emma Chapman won bronze in W16-. The Competition is a mix of orienteering and electronic rifle target shooting.
We had a practice on day 2 which comprised of shooting practice and a grid style mini O course to get the heart rate going!
The main competition took place on day 3 at the Wharncliffe arena. The format of the competition was to navigate through eleven controls over a 370m through Peat's Wood (what looked like a paintball area with loads of features), then back to the shooting range to the shooting range to shoot five targets. Any missed targets resulted in the need to run a 30m loop for each missed target, then it was back into the woods for part 2 of the Orienteering. This was another eleven controls through the complex terrain of Peats Wood. Finally another five shots followed by penalty loops if any where missed and then finish.
It was an exciting event and the challenge came in balancing the fast paced running with settling to a calm stance for the shooting. It was a very popular addition to the festivities at the JK and we'd encourage people to give it a go!
