The slides from the first session are here. Rob talked about the coaching priorities for the year as being safety, a thriving junior squad, and good quality Saturday morning events that would be good preparation for regional and national events. All club members are encouraged to use Routegadget as this can provide planners with great feedback on their planning. Rob showed an example from the Yorkshire and Humberside Night League where he had been the event organiser. The Routegadget video capture shows three legs 14-15-16-17.

The first leg proved to have little route choice, and in fact, one junior competitor found it impossible to cross a ditch due to heavy rain during the event. The long leg 15-16 was more successful in providing route choice, and competitors made different decisions at several points along the leg. Leg 16-17 was a simple leg but nevertheless offered route choice. Detailed analysis was possible because the majority of competitors had uploaded their routes. Garry Greenstreet is co-ordinating RouteGadget for SO and will always be happy to answer any questions. So, please upload your routes!

Rob also encouraged members to try night orienteering as it provides excellent technical training -and for juniors a decent opportunity to win medals. This year’s Southern Night Championships are being organised by SO on Saturday 26 November 2022, and the British Night Orienteering Championships are also in the south at Moors Valley Country Park on 18 Feb 2023 (Nr Ringwood, Dorset).
