Planner’s Comments
Thank you to all for coming today. The weather forecast had not sounded very promising, but the rain never reached us and the sun broke out at mid-day. Judging from your kind comments at the finish, it was pleasing to understand that you enjoyed the challenge.
I was mindful that many of you may have competed in Sheffield Forest earlier this year, and so I tried to plan courses to give a different experience to that offered by Alan Velecky. In particular, I chose to avoid the technical craggy area to the South West, giving it a ‘rest’. Instead, the Green and Blue competitors were offered the opportunity to go astray in the technical part to the North. This indeed caught out a several, some venturing beyond the earthwall boundary to go off the map! On the Green course, there are some impressive times for the legs 6 to 7 and 8 to 9 (or 5 to 6 on the blue). Clive Hawkes, Judith Carder and Ted McDonald thoroughly deserve their positions of first, second and third. On the Blue course, Alan Velecky demonstrated ‘how it should be done’, but others also have a steady line on Splits Browser – indicating fairly fault-free navigation. There was quite a battle for third place over the last couple of legs.
In the case of the Yellow course, I managed to find you a different path from summer – and the course went clockwise rather than anti-clockwise! Congratulations to Daniel Sweatman for a very convincing win. The Orange course also provides a problem for the planner. There are relatively few convenient paths and linear features, and not many options for the course’s structure. However, I hope some of you had the confidence to leave the path and strike off through the forest – and that you were successful. At this time of the year, some of the paths are very muddy, whilst the forest was generally dry underfoot. Pete Ronden took this all in his stride: well done.
Seasonal bracken affects runnability in Sheffield Forest, and I tried to plan legs to avoid the worst. A number of people expressed their pleasant surprise that this was much less of a problem than they feared: It is difficult to keep a map fully up-to-date. I apologise to anyone who was expecting a banner at the finish. (If you ran past the finish control, it should be possible to estimate any difference using other people’s splits.)
