There are 4 annual SO League competitions. 2 SOG series of events - an Autumn League and Spring League; a Summer Sprint League and a SONiC Night League. Results are tallied and highly-prized certificates awarded at the end of the season.
SOGs are friendly club events where children and newcomers are very welcome. Yellow and Orange courses are suitable for children to run on their own with a bit of practice. Adults are welcome to shadow children until they are confident to go on their own or you can orienteer as a family group. Green and Blue courses are run or walked by any age group - you can race competitively or just enjoy the woodland.
The Summer Sprint League runs throughout the summer months with a series of 6 events normally held in local parks or schools. For seniors your best four scores count towards an overall league table (three for juniors) with medals awarded at the end of the last event of the series in the following classes: Junior (16-), Senior (18-35), Veteran (40-50), Super Veteran (55-60) and Ultra Veteran (65+). To be eligible for the league you must run the single sprint course, although yellow and orange courses are also available for younger or less experienced participants.
A series of mid-week Night-O events run during the winter months, with a mix of forest, park and urban terrain. The standard format is a mass start score event starting at 7.30pm where you get one hour to visit as many controls as possible. Typically there is an opportunity for apres-o at a nearby hostelry. Typically three of these events will also be part of the Kent Night Cup league. Newcomers are very welcome. Minimum equipment is a torch and SI dibber (dibbers can be hired on the night).
