Maidenbower and Pound Hill KNCThu 29 October, 2020
Report
MapRun results can be seen here - now with unredacted map
When I heard that the organisers of the KNC were happy to allow lamp posts to be used as control sites I was more than happy not to have to put out units on a damp October evening. I did though want to give you the option of using the MapRun App that so many of us have been using for the last 6 months. This did throw up its own challenges, like how to not reveal the course in advance. If I had used a PIN then MapRunG users needed the PIN to download the event files -which could have been problematic at the event itself, so instead I went for the redacted map approach. Most MapRunF users got their phones to accurately record their control visits. Some MapRunG users had problems - but mainly with getting the software to work. Mind you others also had problems working out how to use a pen properly. At the event itself I was surprised how many decided to head across the wet field from the start, and by the way the crossing point symbol just indicates that the feature can be crossed not that you have to cross there or that there will actually be anything on the ground there.
We hope to be back in the Crawley area in January for the traditional Tilgate New Year KNC.

RouteGadget
Is a web app for sharing and comparing orienteering routes. You can draw your own route or upload a GPS track from your watch. It also allows you to watch an animated replay with a simulated mass start.
Pre event info
An urban night street score event as part of the Kent Night Cup league. Map now extended to include Pound Hill.
SONiC Series Info
SONiCs are events held during the evening hours of darkness and take place either around streets or in parks/woods. They are score events where you get an hour to visit as many controls as you can, with everyone starting at the same time. For insurance purposes juniors under the age (actual age) of 16 are not allowed to compete in street events unaccompanied. For the street events a small torch is helpful to read the map. For forest events a stronger (head)torch is recommended.

Miscellaneous
Official timing will be by SI, so please bring (or hire) an SI card for this purpose. Control sites are all lamposts - you can record your visit by writing down the lampost number on the appropriate section of the map. Alternatively I am allowing competitors to use MapRun to record their control visits - to use this:
1) I have posted the files to the MapRun server under UK/Sussex/MaidenbowerKNC.
2) Although the controls will be visible on MapRun the map will be redacted. Please don't make any attempt to try and work out where the course goes.
3) You should take a pen around with you just in case a control doesn't register on your phone/watch - write down those numbers.
4) You should upload your MapRun result straight after the event (normally this happens automatically)
5) I have the right to reject any adjusted uploads (eg using HITMO or via a .GPX file upload)
Please note: If you have a medical condition of which the Organiser should be aware, please complete the British Orienteering Medical Form here. A hard copy of this will be kept in the KNC folder and taken to KNC events. The form is normally kept in a sealed envelope with your name on; it is only opened in case of an emergency. The sealed envelope could be put in another envelope and posted to the KNC coordinator Mark Glaisher, 14 Leafy Glade Gillingham ME8 0PJ. Alternatively, either bring the sealed envelope to the first KNC you attend and place in the marked cardboard box at the event; or, if you are happy to do this, email the form to Mark (knc@saxons-oc.org) and he will print it out and place in an envelope & seal. The envelopes and forms will be shredded at the end of the 2020-21 KNC season
