So this was our first attempt at planning. And although towards the end it got a bit tense on the whole we thoroughly enjoyed it. We spent several, pleasant, afternoon dog walks in the forest visiting control sites and with some guidance from Steve Jarvis we had the makings of some good courses. We seemed to be on top of everything well in advance and were contentedly waiting for the event weekend. Then on the Friday before, I went to place the controls, only to find a large tree had fallen over and had completely blocked the forest entrance. After many phone calls to the Forestry Commission to ensure we weren't committing any forest vandalism, Mike Baron and I set to it with saws. About an hour or so later we had cleared the way and I could start with the controls. Little things like forest benches being converted to fire places caused us more delays and we still hadn't finished by night fall. So early on Saturday we had it all done and the Sun came out and we started.
The comments were largely very positive and appreciative, with a few suggestions that some of our control placings might not have been as accurate as they should be. There were only 5 missed punches out of a field of over 90 with only 2 of those 5 sharing the same control, so we accept that we have some room to improve for next time. But as novices we've learned a lot and I think we will have improved as orienteers and planners. in fact, I'd urge everybody to have a go at planning. It really is good fun to see orienteering from the "other side of the start line".
As you all know, these events just wouldn't be possible without all the helpers before hand and on the day. So thank you to Steve Jarvis for checking our routes, many times. Karen Ashworth for the RA advice, Mike Gammon for OCAD help and printing. Then on the day, Tom Rooney and Jon Wallace for the SI. Andrew Parkinson (and I'm sure I saw Brian Rodgers with a bucket) for parking, Jill and Steve Blount for selling the maps, and then Chris Hooker, Ruth Rhodes, Ian Ditchfield, Barry Jones and Nick Care for control collecting. And finally a massive thanks to Mike Baron for doing all the organising and car parking and control collecting and tree surgery.
