You were treated to Sheffield Forest at its best today – basking in glorious spring sunshine after a month of rain, with the bluebells magnificent. Perhaps no surprise then that people seemed to enjoy their runs – thank you for those of you who took the time to express positive feedback about the courses. Although the distances were well within the guidelines, the Green and Blue courses were undoubtedly a tough physical and technical challenge, and even the most capable and experienced orienteers were caught out by some controls, leading to slightly longer winning times than usual. Hopefully most of you will have enjoyed the additional value for money, and apologies to anyone who faced a challenge that was tougher than they wanted.
I’ve always liked Sheffield Forest – although it’s small, it contains many unusual rock features and a wealth of contour detail that is more reminiscent of Sheffield in South Yorkshire than Sussex, and John Faller’s map captures the complexity very accurately. As a planner, my goal was to offer you courses that I would like to run myself as a competitor. From your comments, it seems that I achieved my aim of keeping you thinking and off the paths – that was certainly my experience when I ran my own Blue course non-competitively at the end!
As always, the Southdowns machine swung smoothly and impressively into action on the day, and Mike Baron’s organisation was impeccable. Mike also gave me invaluable advice and acted as Controller for the event, which as a rookie SOG planner I very much appreciated. Thank you to Alan Williamson, Brian Rodgers and Rob Keet who got you all parked and kept your cars from getting bogged down in the mud, to Judith and Tim Carder (map sales), and to Ali and Mike Hooper and Jaquie Drake (computing). Mike Baron, Keith Tonkin and Neil Crickmore kindly lightened my load by helping me collect controls, and Neil and Mike Gammon also provided me with invaluable help and advice on the OCAD front prior to the event. Thanks also to Karen Ashworth for help with the bureaucratic aspects of planning a SOG – land permission, risk assessment etc.
Finally a special mention to all the children from Year 4 at my daughter Lily’s school (South Malling Primary in Lewes) and their teacher Annie Schulte, who enjoyed their first experience of forest orienteering today. We hope you had a good day, and will come to our next event at Selhurst Park near Goodwood on 26th May. Who knows whether one of those 9 year old debutants will have caught the bug today, or whether from their ranks a future British Champion will emerge?
