Courses: Blue Green Orange Yellow

Planners Comments
Thank you to all those who travelled all the way over to Stoughton and braved the miserable weather on Saturday. Historically Stoughton is a fascinating area. The area of woodland is famous for its Yew trees, and many of these Yew trees are known to be at least 500 years old (with some probably much older, but impossible to date, as the centre rots away). The very dense Yew tree plantation on the scarp slope (visited by the Blue and Green courses), was planted in this way to encourage they Yew Trees to grow tall and straight; Yew being the wood of choice for longbows. More recently, the woods at Stoughton were used for training Canadian and British Troops during the second world war; you can still see the bullet holes in some of the Yew trees that were used for target practice! Some of the earthworks visited by the Blue and Green courses were ancient fortifications and burial mounds, some of which date as old as 2,500BC; there were Bronze Age people running around in these woods before us!
Being a long thin area, with some very steep sections we found the courses difficult to plan without introducing excessive gradient. We tried to take the Yellow course through some of the beautiful pine forest avenues with the forest floor green with moss, and hopefully introduced sufficient interest to the Orange course, with some the control sites tucked away in the more runnable parts of the forest.
We wanted to present a real navigational challenge to the Blue and Green courses, with these exploring the different terrains in the forest and testing various navigational skills including contouring and pace counting, whilst having to maintain close contact with the map, which in places was really technical.
Our thanks to Michael Merritt for his support with the organisation of the event, and for his comments on the draft courses, together with Sue Crickmore. Thank you also to Mike Gammon for printing the maps, and to all those who helped on the day, including the SI team, Jennie and Ashley Warner for map sales and control collection, Dave McTurk for parking, and Barry Pearson for parking and control collection.
It was great to hear your comments and have some feedback afterwards, and we look forward to planning again.
Edward and Kasia
