Squad invitation to the Brighton City Race

Dear SO Juniors

Our final squad get-together for 2013 will be at the Brighton City Race at 6.30pm on Saturday 14 December 2013.

An additional competition class of ‘Junior+Parent’ has been introduced so that everyone can take part regardless of age. In fact you can form a group comprising any number of juniors with any number of parent/carers over the age of 18.

The Brighton City Race is our biggest annual event and this time it’s attracted competitors from as far away as Edinburgh and Madrid. It’s great fun and the junior competition will take place around the narrow Brighton Lanes. SO Junior Alex Lines has made several videos over the years and they can be viewed at the event website Juniors will have their own start, so you don’t need to worry about getting caught up in the senior race mass start.

The city’s Christmas lights and decorations make this a really festive evening. Assembly is indoors at Middle Street School and after the race you can buy drinks and sweets there ahead of the prize giving. It’s a sociable evening and some people even manage to squeeze in a bit of Christmas shopping in Brighton beforehand!

All participating juniors under the age of 16 should enter the ‘Junior (12-16)’ class.  If you are between the age of 12 and 16 then you have the option to compete unaccompanied, but you can register that option on the night. Everyone should wear a hi-viz top for safety and bring a torch to help read the map. Entry for SO Junior members is free and accompanying adults do not pay either. You should use ‘helper code’ l9k2o5k to get a 100% discount from the normal junior entry fee of £5. The maps are at a scale of 1:5,000.

It’s a great Christmas get-together with some exciting orienteering thrown in too.

Hope to see you there

Robert Lines.
