What’s On

There are a number of junior orienteering events scheduled for the next few weeks.

Half-term training in Stanmer Park
Next Tuesday evening 18 February 2014 there’s an opportunity to train at night with the junior squad in Stanmer Park, Brighton. We’re meeting at 7pm and the details will be posted on the SO website in the next few days.
Night orienteering is great training as it requires an extra bit of concentration. There will be two courses: 4km for the older juniors; and 2km for younger juniors with parents. The junior squad has headtorches to lend out, so don’t hesitate to let me know in advance if you would like to borrow one.

There are two night competitions that we enter each year. The Peter Palmer Junior Relays and the Harvester. These are really popular events with the junior competitors, so come and have a go in Stanmer Park if you haven’t tried before. It’s a definite adventure.
(It’s not a 100% requirement to let me know if you are coming, but it would be helpful and then we can make sure we have enough maps.)

Coaching at West Friston
The next junior coaching session will be at Friston Forest West on 1 March 2014. Details to follow.

Yvette Baker Trophy (YBT) Qualifier
This year Southdowns Orienteers are hosting the final of the YBT, so we will need a strong turnout at the qualifying round to make sure we get through to our own event in the summer. The qualifier is on Sunday 9 March 2014 and takes place near Sevenoaks.
For younger juniors, the option exists to run in pairs on the Yellow course. Entries will be co-ordinated by Team Manager Simon Thraves who will decide who should run which course. It’s all about tactics and scoring the highest number of points. For example, we may need some of our best Green runners to compete on Orange etc.
If you are a younger junior, and may be able to get round a yellow course by running in a pair with another junior, then we definitely need you! Please contact Simon to let him know and he will get things organised. Ideally, it would be good to have a practice with your team mate at Friston, so please let Simon know as soon as possible.

Thanks and best wishes
