Orienteering is an exciting, challenging sport that involves competitive navigation, usually in woodland or on open hillside. Each competitor uses a map and compass, choosing their own way, to find the red and white flags at the sites indicated by red circles on their map. Southdowns Orienteers is a friendly club offering local events throughout Sussex.
(Update September 2008) - Southdowns Orienteers offer midweek training sessions with the Southdowns Adventure Running Club. These sessions have a varied format, but generally all have running and navigation elements to them. A great opportunity to socialise, keep fit, and hone navigation techniques.

Thomas Jarvis witnessed a mountain bike accident at a recent orienteering event. He unselfishly sacrificed his chances in his race and provided comfort to the injured rider.

Sunday’s event saw us have a reasonably comfortable win over SN and HH. Full results can be seen on the LOK website (http://www.londonorienteering.co.uk) and the result means that we will be heading up to the final near Sheffield on October 17th.

Three Southdowners have been picked by the England selectors for Interland 2010. Congratulations to Alan Velecky (M40), Nicholas Jarvis (M14 travelling reserve) and Julia Jarvis (W40 reserve).

SO members take on the BAOC Military Challenge

The British Army Orienteering Club (BAOC) stage a military challenge event each December (also known as the Around Aldershot event) where several foot o and mountain bike courses are on offer. This event did go ahead, in the snow, on Saturday and several SO members were there.
