Orienteering is an exciting, challenging sport that involves competitive navigation, usually in woodland or on open hillside. Each competitor uses a map and compass, choosing their own way, to find the red and white flags at the sites indicated by red circles on their map. Southdowns Orienteers is a friendly club offering local events throughout Sussex.
(Update September 2008) - Southdowns Orienteers offer midweek training sessions with the Southdowns Adventure Running Club. These sessions have a varied format, but generally all have running and navigation elements to them. A great opportunity to socialise, keep fit, and hone navigation techniques.

The biggest, and arguably the most impressive, orienteering event takes place this weekend in Finland. Well over 1500 teams of 7 will compete throughout the night including four all British teams and many other British runners (including one Southdowner) running for foreign teams.

Preston Park Maze Challenge

Junior Sticker Cards available at Tilgate

There are eight parks to visit in this year’s summer series and juniors will be able to collect a sticker at each event. Prizes will be given out at the final round at Brighton University.

Summer Park Series kicks off in Tilgate Park

The first of this year’s park events is on Saturday 15 June 2013 in Tilgate Park, Crawley. It’s an ideal opportunity to have a go at orienteering and there will be help on hand to get you started. For club runners, it’s a first opportunity to score points in the 2013 Sprint Series (4 events from 9 to count). Details.
