Please read the information about the proposed British Orienteering Levy for 2010 which was posted on their website on 9th December. Having scanned it quickly - with a busy couple of days ahead of me - it was not until the club meeting last night that Sue told me comments are required by this Sunday, 14th December ahead of the Board meeting on 15th. Please click here and take the time to read it and send in your comments.

I was under the impression that the 2009 levy change was going to have a big impact on SO but looking at the Levy Club Impact spreadsheet provided by British Orienteering it would seem that total levy paid by SO will go down in 2009 and then rise to something slightly less than the 2008 value in 2010 (based on 2007 participation numbers). So is it a big issue for us? Are the figures misleading because they are based on 2007 participation?

The biggest impact will be on our SOG events. Currently we pay no levy on our SO juniors because they have free entry. We were told that, in future all juniors would incur the full levy. On figures I used to estimate the 2009 Levy based on the 6 events we had in early 2008 the increase would be nearly 33% from £420 to £558. Because the first 75 competitors are free, the cost implication is greater as numbers increase.
True - the levy on our larger open events will decrease.
I have to admit that I still haven’t studied the figures on the BO spreadsheet in detail. I hope to be able to do that this evening.

Looking at the figures for SO local events on page 2 of the spreadsheet, it would appear that SOGs attracting around 120 participants or more will incur a slightly higher levy than at present, those with fewer will incur a lower one.

Simon is right, but as the number increases from 120 the levy begins to rise quite steeply, an extra £1.50 for each competitor, which is why my figures above show a large percentage increase. Participation earlier this year was very high.
I think, though, that I am really looking at the larger picture and not just how this change affects our club. The 2009 system penalises junior events if seniors are allowed to run and also penalises increased participation.
Personally I would prefer to see the junior levy as a fraction of the senior levy.
