Stephen Wright won the first 8 controls at Blatchington Mill and held onto the lead throughout the race. All this despite SO runner Peter Chapman’s best efforts which closed the margin to just 12 seconds by the final leg to the finish.
Winsplits analysis is available (including pack analysis) for Blatchington Mill and for Hove Park.
Jonathan Crickmore (M16) won in Hove Park by a significant margin. However, he wasn’t able to complete the SuperSprint double, withdrawing from the event at the halfway stage.
There are lots of people to thank, but first and foremost thanks to John Faller for mapping the area at short notice. The event would have been a non-starter without his flexibility and preparedness to take on so many mapping assignments in the last couple of months.
It was also great to be able to work closely with the two schools and to gain permissions so readily. Thanks to Aldrington’s head Mike Jee and our very own Steve Ewens for sorting out everything with Blatchington Mill. The gate between the two schools has never been opened before, and in fact trees now make it impossible to open them fully. However, I think it was worth doing as it meant we had some initial complexity and that we could use both schools without having to cross the busy cricket club car park.
John has also produced a 1:2,500 map for Blatchington Mill School and I know that this will be well used by both the school and by the new SO club night which we hope to start on Tuesday evenings from September in and around the main school gym.
I’m not sure that the site lent itself too well to planning White and Yellow courses as there were very few paths or tracks that weren’t also shared by vehicles. There were plenty of line features, but nevertheless these are not necessarily of the type familiar to the regular junior forest orienteer.. Well done to all those that got round White and Yellow OK!
Planning Orange and Sprint was an enjoyable experience. There’s nothing better than walking round with a new map looking for features that would make interesting control sites. The plan was to make the start as intense as possible - giving little time to plan ahead. Stephen Wright’s 100% success record over the first 8 controls was impressive and sees him crowned ‘King of the Complex’.
Thanks to Julia Jarvis for map sales, Barry Jones for co-ordinating the SI, Clare Lines for looking after the welcome desk and Judith Carder, Peter Chapman, Ali Weller and Mike Hooper for control collecting. Thanks to Simon Thraves for helping to re-batten the gate closed, and to Chris Curtis for the tools to open it in the first place. Thanks also to all the other SO members that helped out on the day.
The next round of the championships is in Preston Park, with another 27 controls awaiting the Sprint competitors.
