Southdowns Orienteers had a fantastic response to their “Try Orienteering” stand at “Park Fest”, in Horsham Park last Sunday.
Almost 100 youngsters tackled the string course, and 50 more confident visitors “Challenged the Grid” for a more technical orienteering experience.
Southdowners are a hardy bunch, and assembled the orienteering activities in most unseasonal (for July!) torrential rain and gusty wind. The previous years Park Fest had been cancelled due to very bad weather, and this one wasn’t off to a great start either! Undeterred by the rain, however, and fully prepared, the SO team toughed out the rough patch of weather and (after a predictably slow start) fielded a sustained onslaught of eager customers once the weather cleared. It was a fantastic to see how well everyone took to the orienteering challenges.
The String course wove it’s way through small trees and bushes in this attractive park. There were cartoon characters at intervals along the string, and the participants recorded their progress round the course using the same type of electronic punching equipment as used in bigger orienteering races and adventure racing. Every successful participant won a prize (a selection from the tub of sweets!).
The “Challenge the Grid” exercise was a much tougher proposition and required clear thinking and good orientation of the competition map to succeed. It was great to see how quickly the participants learnt what to do and how well they applied their new skills. All participants on this course also received a well earned prize from the sweet box.
A dynamic results display was maintained with a traditional “washing line” type structure with slips of card attached with the name and time of each participant in time order. There was a definite spirit of competition and many youngsters came back at intervals to see how they were doing in the overall standing.
Excitement at the Results Display
We had participants aged from under 2 to almost 80 years of age, with plenty from Horsham, but some from much further afield too.
We hope that those who tried the orienteering in Horsham Park may wish to try one of our regular events. There is even an event in Horsham Park itself on Saturday 19th July - we’d be delighted to see you again! Other event details are in the “Events” section of this website.
