48 brave souls (plus several children) ventured into the darkness of Tilgate Golf Course and The Hawth in Crawley last night. Conditions weren’t ideal; it was drizzling, very wet and boggy underfoot, deep rivers to cross and the recent forestry work at the southern end of the Tilgate map didn’t aid smooth running, but people were undeterred.
This was the first time either of us had planned a night event or a score event, so it was a great learning experience and we hope you enjoyed it. It was great to see new faces that had not experienced a SONiC/KNC event previously – we hope you enjoyed it and will return for more Night O fun!
From the beginning, we wanted to ensure we had catered for everyone. The differences in the terrain, from the semi open/forested golf course, to the urban street running to the technically challenging Hawth gave us plenty to think about (and plenty of good control sites in the Hawth in particular!).
It was interesting awaiting the glimmer of head torches to appear across the playing fields. We’d had a conversation about who would be first back, who would collect all 20 controls, how challenging it was going to be etc. In the end three people collected all 20 controls, Nick Barrable, Jon Crickmore and Kenny Leitch, although Kenny was late back!
Looking at the splits, Nick & Jon both headed into the Golf course first, leaving the few in the Hawth for later, whereas Kenny did the opposite, and headed up to the Hawth first. Nick’s winning route was 82-75-88-81-77-85-79-86-83-89-74-72-78-76-70-80-73-87-84-71.
Many thanks to all the control collectors – Mike Hooper, Jim Parker (assisted by Sue Parker and Bridget Hooper), Phil Craven, Nick Barrable and Dave Cave-Ayland and also thanks to all who donated prizes – the prize giving was well attended in the Harvester Pub.
