On Sunday July 24th, SO took part in Horsham District Council’s Sparks in the Park Day in Horsham Park and shared our enthusiasm and knowledge of orienteering with everyone there.
Sparks in the Park is an annual event held by Horsham District Council, which we as a club have been supporting for many years. There are many different local sports clubs on hand, many with taster activities or demonstrations, plus community groups, a fun fair and the very colourful and noisy Big Shout Out carnival procession at the end of the afternoon.
As in previous years, we had two activities available for people to try - a Thomas the Tank Engine string course and the Grid (naughty numbers) course, plus we were able to spend time talking to people about orienteering, what it is, where and when we take part and future events, particularly the event in Horsham on September 3rd.
The weather was fantastic all day and there were a lot of people in the park, we had a total of 184 people participate in either of the activities over a five hour period which is an increase on the numbers from last year. The lure of free sweets obviously works every time ! We were honoured to have the Carnival King and Queen, Lord & Lady Loudhailer join us and try the grid course ! Some photos from the event are available here.
As always, these days are not possible without the help of many people so a big thank you to - Moira & Fiona Harlow, Gethyn Lewis, Jill & Steve Blount, Jennie Warner, Ian Waghorn, Andy, Chris & Oliver Hannaford, Anna, Pete, Ben & Emma Chapman and Ian Curtis.
If anyone is interested or keen to find out more about these summer publicity days, or would like to offer to help, we are doing it all again at the Chichester Get Active day, as part of the Chichester Big Weekend, in Oaklands Park on Sunday September 11th. Please contact Ali Hooper.

There’s a really good photo on p6 of the Horsham Edition of the ‘County Times’ this week, showing some of the team in their finery!
