The British Army Orienteering Club (BAOC) stage a military challenge event each December (also known as the Around Aldershot event) where several foot o and mountain bike courses are on offer. This event did go ahead, in the snow, on Saturday and several SO members were there.
The courses on offer this year ranged from a long Black foot O course of 18kms through the usual colour coded courses (Brown, Blue, Green etc) and three mountain bike courses of 40kms, 25kms and 12kms. The event was based in the Army area of Barossa, in Camberley, which didn’t have as much snow as we seemed to have had in Sussex. The parking, registration and the start and finish were all at the top of a hill, meaning we all started off going downhill and finished going back up it !
The snow certainly added to the event - it was very pretty out on the courses, although it made it quite interesting and occasionally a little bit scary cycling over ice !
The two longer MTBO courses started in Barossa and had several maps to take them round several orienteering areas - Barossa, Mytchett, Ash, Long Valley & Hawley plus a few minor roads and paths inbetween which needed more organisation than usual to make sure you were on the right map ! The short MTBO course stayed entirely in Barossa on just one orienteering map, as did the foot O courses, which was definitely easier.
The results are available here from the BAOC website. There were some good results for Jon Crickmore - 2nd on the Black course and Simon Thraves, 4th on the Brown and Steve Ewns 5th on the Short MTBO course.
It was a really good event, I certainly enjoyed my first MTBO course.
