Nick Barrable wins at The Hawth

It was a win for former British Sprint Champion Barrable, but in second place was junior Nick Jarvis (M14) who was the fastest SO competitor on the day. Results, Tables, Photos.

I was a spectator at this event (slight injury prevented participation), but enjoyed the general atmosphere of it all.
The woods had something quite mysterious about them in the area of the start with the twisty path and numerous depressions. The vegetation also looked a bit more pleasant than the previous years Sprint/Park race here (in September) and still had some of the late spring/summer flowers.

The Theatre and playing fields were particularly busy on that Saturday, but most of the other activity was later in the day, and I felt that the orienteering dovetailed nicely into the schedule - there was no noticeable conflict of interests from my perspective. Many thanks to Crawley Borough Council for having the confidence in SO’s arrangements enough to allow permission on such a busy day.

I walked through the woods to the playing fields and enjoyed seeing the orienteers purposefully criss-crossing the open area with subtle differences in route choice. The wooded part presented more choice and required much more care to execute chosen routes - variation between participants routes was much more apparent.

The atmosphere after the running was great, with much discussion and laughter. Ed’s birthday confection was literally the “icing on the cake”!

The whole event felt like a very sociable and fun affair. Good job done by those involved in staging the event.
