Planner Andy Hannaford’s Comments

Planning at Southwater proved to be a bit of a moveable feast as, in the two weeks before the event, a chainsaw team proceeded to clear parts of the wooded areas and place huge piles of brashings along previously accessible pieces of woodland. A path and a control site were completely buried only days before the event and thanks to Mike’s computer skills and patience we were able to re-jig the map right up to the last minute leaving only a couple of minor changes on the day.
After the rains of the previous week we were blessed with perfect conditions and putting out controls was quite a treat. The night before was crystal clear with a bright full moon and on the day we were treated with a clear frosty start with mist rising from the lake; a real photographers dream.
Courses seemed to be well received. Thanks to those who gave feedback after their run: it’s always welcome. The appeal of steep clay banks and hawthorn had obviously worn a little thin for some towards the end of their runs and I do apologise for the uphill slide to the last control. It was great to see such a large turn out of juniors and such involvement in Andy and Judy’s excellent training courses.
A huge cast seem to help with SOGs and as usual there is a long list of thanks. Thanks, Andy B for general supportive advice and help; thanks to the car park team John M, Jan, Anna and Peter. Thanks Mike G for uncomplainingly sorting out every new map variation I threw at you, Jaquie and Miles for operating the technical bit and Ruth, Robert, Johanna, Christopher, Pat M, Dave S, Ian W with Charlie and Jamie for collecting controls and tape. Finally, thanks to Janet, Christopher and Oliver for help with maps and starting and also to those who work behind the scenes to make SOGs successful.
