We feel very strongly that everyone should take a close look at proposal 4, which puts forward options for a change to the levy for 2010. The British Orienteering Levy is the fee paid to British Orienteering by the club based on levels of participation at each event – this contributes to event insurance and central administration of the sport..
All British Orienteering members should have received their Annual General Meeting Booklet during the last week.
Les and I have been checking out the BO Levy proposals for 2010 and a spreadsheet showing the effects of each of the proposals on our various events is attached here. From a financial point of view we feel that Option A would be the most favourable to Southdowns Orienteers. The balance of juniors and seniors in SO events is such that the only series to benefit from a smaller levy for juniors would be the Park Os and this is a fairly small benefit - easily compensated for by the benefits of using Option A to our SOGs and Open Events.
British Orienteering’s intention is to increase overall levy income by 5% from 2009 to 2010. Assuming similar events and levels of participation, option A most closely reflects this objective for SO as it would give a 6% increase on levy from 2009 to 2010.
The volunteer club officials work very hard at SO to encourage families and juniors in particular and we do not envisage changing our policy of free entry to all our events for SO juniors – thus doing our utmost to encourage youngsters. SO structures its fees to provide the best value for its membership therefore if the levy is a large drain on our event budgets then this may have an impact on entry fees paid per event in the future.
Past experience has shown that proxy voting makes up a large proportion of the overall vote at the AGM. We would urge you all to look at the proposals and consider making use of your Proxy Voting Form for all the proposals if you will not be attending the AGM in Northumberland on 11th April 2009. Proxy Voting Forms must be received no later than Monday 6th April 2009 so please do not delay.

There is also a pdf available from the British Orienteering website which shows the 3 proposed options applied to all clubs based on 2007 participation figures. It’s quite interesting to see how different clubs could be affected by the different options and also how much different clubs actually pay in levy.
