Club Handicap - Planner’s Comments

Here are Ian Waghorn’s comments on his first experience of planning an event.  Definitely worth a read.

I have to confess that I was a little daunted by the prospect of planning this event. Considering I have great difficulty negotiating my way around a course at the best of times the idea of actually devising courses for other people seemed ridiculous. Luckily, in stepped Les Hooper as my controller.

Les had already spent a huge amount of hours mapping the area of Great Walstead school and carefully explained what I needed to do including help with OCAD. After a few attempts and some walks around the terrain the final courses were decided upon. Les had to explain to me that this was not my opportunity to wreak revenge on the Southdowns Orienteers for all the times I hadn’t been able to find a control. I thought that control descriptions of ‘centre of lake’ or ‘deep inside impenetrable bracken’ were entirely reasonable, luckily for you guys, Les tempered my devious intentions. In actual fact the course planning is very enjoyable and not as difficult as you might think, if you haven’t tried it before I would thoroughly recommend it.

As we put out the controls early on Saturday morning I was really able to appreciate what a beautiful area we were being given the opportunity to use. Thanks must go to the school and the local farmer for allowing us the use of their land.

Getting everyone started was quite stressful, making sure you all left at the allocated time. Hopefully you all got away at the right time and it seemed that most of you enjoyed the courses. It was exciting to see you all racing back to pick up your next map and we had a few races to the finish line.

One of the biggest lessons you learn as the planner is that you are just a small part of a dedicated team of people that make these events possible. The process of making a map from scratch must take hours of patient work, Les has done an amazing job for this area. Then there is the computer set up and registration, many thanks to the Drakes and Bridget, Mike and Anna for their help on the day. Thanks to my family for help with parking and starting and finally to Jim Parker, Andy Hannaford and the Hulley family for help with control collecting (sorry Tim, I couldn’t resist giving you the long walk!)

So, many thanks to everyone involved but especially Les without whom it would never have happened.
