Forty five souls braved Broadstone Warren last night for the first SONiC (Southdowns Orienteers Night Champs), which was also a Kent Night Cup event, plannned by Neil Crickmore.
The SONiC league is comprised of a series of six events, over the winter months, with the scores from the best four events counting towards your final score. There are no prizes for this league though - just the glory of seeing your name in print on the website !
The scoring for the SONiC is the same as last year - 100 points for the winner and planner of each event, 99 points for second place and so on. At the end of the series, winners will be announced in the following categories:
First Male/Female (M/W21 - M/W45)
First Male/Female Vet (M/W50+)
First Male/Female Junior (up to M/W20)
The rain from earlier in the day passed by, as fireworks could be heard in the distance as we all arrived at Broadstone Warren last night. For November, it was pretty mild, although we knew it would be wet underfoot in places.
As usual we had a mass start at 7.30 and a slight twist to the usual KNC/SONiC format. There were still 20 controls to collect, however 10 were marked on the map with large circles and the other 10 with smaller circles. We were allowed to start with either the larger or smaller circles and swap over to the other at any point, but once we did, we were no longer allowed to collect those we started with.
The controls were spread all over the Broadstone map, those of who who have run there, will know how easy it can be to get confused, especially with paths not being as distinct as you’d hope (especially with the leaves falling and at night !!) There were several discussions afterwards about missing one control on a path/stream junction.
As is usual with the KNC/SONiC events, several people gathered for a meal and prizegiving in a suitable hostelry afterwards, to compare route choices. The winners on the night were:
First male - Alan Hickling (SAX)
First Female - Julia Jarvis (SO)
First Male Vet - Ian Ditchfield (MV)
First Female Vet - Sarah Howes (SAX)
First Male Junior - Alex Lines (SO)
First Female Junior - Rachel Collins (SO)
Please see attached spreadsheeet with details of all times and points and the SONiC League so far.... Who will be crowned SONiC champions this year ??
Future events are: November 21st - MV Senile, Buchan Park, Crawley; December 15th - Brighton; January 7th - Tilgate & Golf Course, Crawley; February 4th - Burgess Hill; March 4th - East Grinstead.
If you would like to get involved with helping at one of the future SONiC events, please contact Steve Jarvis or the event planner (details on the Events page).

I thought that it would be difficult for anyone to get all 20 controls unless all were spiked cleanly - which as Ali pointed out is not easy with the vague path network and bracken. I tried to make the control obvious if you got close so that there would not be too much hunting around. I had a complaint that the control on the long, high earthwall was missing, misplaced or hidden. Personally I didn’t think that it was any of these. I tried to make the optimum route hard to pick (I’ve no idea what it is). I thought that more of you would head down the hill to the stream or clearing first but the tower seemed to be the most popular first control.

Fantastic event. A real challenge to the brain with the two different groups of controls. I never did have time/manage to decide when to start collecting the second ones - there always seemed to be one more within reach!
