British Middle Distance Champs

Southdowns success at Middle Distance Champs in the Lake District

Half a dozen Southdowners made the 650 mile round trip last weekend to take part in the British middle distance Orienteering Championships at Haverthwaite Heights, on a steep and rocky wooded hillside at the South-west end of Lake Windermere.  This is a very technically and physically demanding area, and courses were kept short with a high density of controls to reflect this.  In addition, very exact navigation (within a few metres) was essential to locate most controls which were “very keenly!!” positioned by the planners.  The leaders tended to be those competitors who lost least time on the course, rather than being the fastest runners.  Only the very best runners beat 10 minutes per km.

Nick Jarvis and Ruth Rhodes both had excellent runs and were among the medals.  Nick was 2nd in M14 (25 seconds down) and Ruth 3rd in W65.

Next April, SO are hosting the 2011 middle distance championships at Worthlodge Forest, Crawley.
