The first closing date for cheap entries for the White Rose weekend in August is tomorrow, 4th June.

This weekend is held in Yorkshire over the August Bank Holiday weekend and is a good fun weekend ! SO have done quite well in their haul of trophies - White Rose mugs over previous years !

Full details can be found here: White Rose

As usual, I’m happy to co-ordinate Relay Teams for the monday - I have entered one Class A Team with our entry.

I’m just putting in White Rose entries for Anna and myself.
We will also enter one A class relay (Team Score) team.
We intend to camp at the event site and I’m entering for the night score.

NB Entries don’t stop after tomorrow, just get more expensive. Next closing date will be 27 July (with later entries possible after then with a higher premium still).
The increase in price (for adults) is £1/day at each closing date.

It’s usually a very good weekend away - hope to see a good contingent of SO people attending (as usual).

Jim, Sue, Les and I are also entered for the White Rose.  Jim has also entered an old folks’ relay team: class B 160+! We are going up a day early to recapture our youth by taking a trip on the North Yorks Moors Steam Railway.

I have also entered the White Rose. I will be willing to join any desperate relay team

The White Rose is an event everyone should try sometime in there life. If the orienteering dose not came up to expectations the banter on the camp site makes up for it.

Ed summed up the White Rose weekend experience very well. It’s as much a social and holiday occasion as it is an athletic sporty one.

A very important factor in it’s overall appeal is the camaraderie of the campsite. Typically, this may extent to group meal in a local pub or a barbecue. There’s also the opportunity to combine the weekend with a bit of sightseeing, walking (the heather clad moors are fantastic at this time of year, and the bilberries are plump, juicy and ripe for picking!) and general holiday stuff.

It’s a bit of a trek for most SO (about the same as a trip to the Lake District - 300 miles or so each way), but the orienteering and camping are very good value and a good introduction to multi-day events. Also chance to try out some different forms of orienteering with the night score event, team score, and mountain bike orienteering - see the White Rose Website for details.

If you’re able to travel a bit further, then Paul’s suggestion of the Purple Thistle event sounds quite magical, with it’s setting on a Scottish island, and low key, but top quality orienteering competition.

White Rose has a special place in the hearts of many Southdowners (was my very first multi-day and origin of my first O tee-shirt!), so any going to this years event are likely to be in good company.

I have entered the competition in Compass Sport in the hope of winning free entry to White Rose - but fear that by the time i have heard whether or not I have won, it’ll be too late bto enter by the normal channels.......

Martin, am I right in thinking, if you have already entered and you then win the Compass Sport competition, they refund your entry fees ? I think that’s what has been advertised in the past !!

Enter anyway - it’s a great weekend !
