Coaching / training / social in Tunbridge Wells

DFOK and SAXONS are holding a coaching afternoon and evening social following the Kent Orienteering League event at Tunbridge Wells common on 19th March. Nick Barrable is organising. We have some spare spaces and would like to invite SO members. The cost will be £5 (cost of the Kent Orienteering League event is extra, as is the meal at Mount Edgcumbe hotel near Tunbridge Wells common). Everything (including the KOL event) is within walking distance of Tunbridge Wells station.

If you wish to go then please could you email Sean Cronin ( coach at dfok dot co dot uk ) on or before Tuesday 15th March. We probably have room for another 5 or 10 depending on demand from Saxons/DFOK, so email early to avoid disappointment! Please say which parts of the day you wish to go to.

The itinerary is as follows:

After the KOL event, have a snack and we will convene at:

1400 for 2 hours of extra training.

To include a Czech relay (in pairs) and other excitement.

1700 - 1800 Psychology for Orienteers - Talk, Thought, Reflection and Discussion - Mount Edgcumbe hotel, Tunbridge Wells. (see http://mountedgcumbe.com)

1830 onwards. Meal at Mount Edgecumbe hotel (further reflection/discussion on the talk perhaps?)

After meal – possible bowling trip.

For: Anyone who has managed to get round a Light Green Course - any age.

It is very much hoped people will enjoy the whole day together and not avoid the food and bowling part!

Best wishes,

Sean Cronin (DFOK).

Coaching Opportunity At Coates Common

If you are interested in improving your Orienteering skills I am happy to do any of the following:

1. Discuss your course before or after your run.

2. Shadow you round a course (provided you don’t run too fast for me to keep up!). N.B. I can only realistically do this for one person per SOG but if there is a demand for this I may be able to get other experienced Orienteers to help.

3. Give you feedback after the event via email based on your route posted on Routegadget and your splits.

If any of the above are of interest to you - let me know.

I am putting on a Peter Palmer Night training exercise for the Junior Team on 19th September at Buchan Country Park near Crawley. The aim is to simulate the first leg of a night relay. If any adults would like to help by making up the pack (approx 3K, Orange standard) I’d be grateful. The only requirement is that you be willing to stay with the pack rather than trying to leave it behind.

I have a limited number of maps so please email me (Andy dot Bridge1 AT googelmail dot com) if you are interested.

Mountain Marathons

Many SOs will be donning fell shoes and rucsacs this summer and autumn and taking to the mountains for the LAMM, Saunders, OMM or one of the many Mountain O events throughout the UK.

I know we have a few MM virgins amongst us this year! As a bit of a MM veteran (I think it’s now 15 KIMMs/OMMs), I’d be up for hosting a MM evening during June - a sort of A-Z of Mountain Marathons. What to do/avoid (I think I’ve probably made most mistakes that can be made), eating, drinking, kit, navigation, hints & tips, etc.. Basically anything anyone wants to cover and an opportunity to ask all those questions that it’s not easy to get an answer to....like, how bad are the toilets?!

First things first....who’s interested?!

OCAD 9

Hi,

I’m planning Wolstonbury SOG, have downloaded ocad 9 demo and have received the map file emailed from Mike. But when I try and add a course symbol it tells me I’m limited to 500 items so I can’t add it.

Anyone any ideas, should I be downloading the professional version?

Thanks

Tim

Fun relay at club training

The fun relay at the end of the club training on Sunday at Oldhouse Warren, will be another Crickmore special. For those of you who have tried one before we have a different variation this time:

A 4-3-2-1 relay

4 courses, 3 people in a team, 2 times each course is run, 1 winner! (idea borrowed from South East Junior Squad)

Don’t worry all will be revealed. the relay will be at about 1pm and the start will be at the registration area. (not the car park!) It is designed for very mixed ability. Yellow standard upwards. Electronic punching, but we do have spare dibbers.

So let Andy know if you are in need of honing up your attack point skills, your pacing or your aiming off and want to finish it off with a fast(!) and furious relay.

Orienteering in southern hemisphere

Has anyone orienteered in the southern hemisphere? Having just read some details on the World Masters Orienteering Championships 2009 being held in Sydney Australia it says “All competitors will need to have a southern hemisphere compass”. Is there a difference? Would not a northern hemisphere compass just point south and the maps be set to magnetic south?

Garmin/SportTracks Software

Has anyone used the SportTracks software with a Garmin Forerunner ?

I’m hoping to get a Forerunner 305 for Christmas and have been looking at the SportTracks website and am not sure which version to download.

It looks as though there is more development to be completed on V2 (beta version) and I’m not sure whether to go straight into the beta version or download v1.3 and update later once v2 is complete.

What does anyone else use ?

Many thanks,
Ali

Two part Courses using OCAD 9 (Demo) course setting tool

I’m intending on having two parts to the Navy course at the Blackland SENiLe and could do with some advice on how best to draw this using the Course Planning facility in the demo (i.e. free use) version of OCAD 9.

The particular problem that I’m trying to resolve is how to continue the control numbering on the second part of the course such that it is incremental from the last control on the first part. All my attempts up to now have the numbering starting at 1 again.

I’ve tried the various course types on offer (normal, relay, one man relay), but that doesn’t seem to work. I’m not sure what other options there are.

I understand that it is possible to edit the numbers using the full (paid for) version of OCAD 9 (and effectively pass the problem onto someone else to solve), but this seems a bit of a cop out!

It must be quite a common situation to overcome, as many of our local SOG events take place on small areas and require multiple loops for course length and clarity. I’m hoping that someone may have discovered the key to this problem and can enlighten me (and, I suspect, many others!).

Thanks in anticipation,

Peter
