I know we have a few MM virgins amongst us this year! As a bit of a MM veteran (I think it’s now 15 KIMMs/OMMs), I’d be up for hosting a MM evening during June - a sort of A-Z of Mountain Marathons. What to do/avoid (I think I’ve probably made most mistakes that can be made), eating, drinking, kit, navigation, hints & tips, etc.. Basically anything anyone wants to cover and an opportunity to ask all those questions that it’s not easy to get an answer to....like, how bad are the toilets?!

First things first....who’s interested?!

Hi,

I’m planning Wolstonbury SOG, have downloaded ocad 9 demo and have received the map file emailed from Mike. But when I try and add a course symbol it tells me I’m limited to 500 items so I can’t add it.

Anyone any ideas, should I be downloading the professional version?

Thanks

The fun relay at the end of the club training on Sunday at Oldhouse Warren, will be another Crickmore special. For those of you who have tried one before we have a different variation this time:

A 4-3-2-1 relay

4 courses, 3 people in a team, 2 times each course is run, 1 winner! (idea borrowed from South East Junior Squad)

Don’t worry all will be revealed. the relay will be at about 1pm and the start will be at the registration area. (not the car park!) It is designed for very mixed ability. Yellow standard upwards. Electronic punching, but we do have spare dibbers.

So let Andy know if you are in need of honing up your attack point skills, your pacing or your aiming off and want to finish it off with a fast(!) and furious relay.

Has anyone orienteered in the southern hemisphere? Having just read some details on the World Masters Orienteering Championships 2009 being held in Sydney Australia it says “All competitors will need to have a southern hemisphere compass”. Is there a difference? Would not a northern hemisphere compass just point south and the maps be set to magnetic south?

Has anyone used the SportTracks software with a Garmin Forerunner ?
I’m hoping to get a Forerunner 305 for Christmas and have been looking at the SportTracks website and am not sure which version to download.

It looks as though there is more development to be completed on V2 (beta version) and I’m not sure whether to go straight into the beta version or download v1.3 and update later once v2 is complete.

What does anyone else use ?

Many thanks,

I’m intending on having two parts to the Navy course at the Blackland SENiLe and could do with some advice on how best to draw this using the Course Planning facility in the demo (i.e. free use) version of OCAD 9.

The particular problem that I’m trying to resolve is how to continue the control numbering on the second part of the course such that it is incremental from the last control on the first part. All my attempts up to now have the numbering starting at 1 again.

I’ve tried the various course types on offer (normal, relay, one man relay), but that doesn’t seem to work. I’m not sure what other options there are.

I understand that it is possible to edit the numbers using the full (paid for) version of OCAD 9 (and effectively pass the problem onto someone else to solve), but this seems a bit of a cop out!

It must be quite a common situation to overcome, as many of our local SOG events take place on small areas and require multiple loops for course length and clarity. I’m hoping that someone may have discovered the key to this problem and can enlighten me (and, I suspect, many others!).

Thanks in anticipation,

I would very much welcome more comments on training / coaching:

What topics would people like addressed in training?

Riverswood training session.
Does it work having training after a SOG or are people too tired to consider it?

I was very glad to see a dozen or so people try the training but I was dissappointed by the lack of newcomers/juniors (only one junior and two newcomers). Was this because people didn’t know it was happening?

Please give me some feedback so we can improve
