Are there any official rules for a Harris relay?

My understanding has always been that if all team members do not visit all the spine controls then the team will be disqualified for having not completed the course.

Having recently competed in a Harris Relay with an add rule of being 15 minutes late back the team loses all there points, I was in a position that I could not get all the spine with in the time limit. I continued trying to get the last 2 spine controls before the 15 minutes elapsed. I did not make it and finished just over 16 minutes late back and excepted that the team would lose all their points, but was amazed when I looked at the results and saw that the team that was in 3rd place, not all the team members had visited all the spine controls and if I had left the last 2 the team I was in would have been on the podium.

If this is acceptable then is there any point in having a spine?

So, what has everyone been up to during those long summer (light) evening nights? Sitting in front of the tv, frustrated at the lack of night orienteering?

Well, don’t worry. The long wait is nearly over. The evenings are drawing in nicely and darkness arrives nearly early enough to justify some night-O. In anticipation of sunset arriving at 7pm ish in a couple of weeks time, the Kent Night Cup returns shortly. Event 1, of which I am the proud planner, (or alternatively, that I had my arm twisted to organise whilst sharing a car with Nick back from Shooters Hill to Tunbridge Wells) is provisionally booked for Knole Park on Thursday 18th September. Put the date in your diary now and let all your friends know too. Full details should hopefully be on Saxons’ web site this weekend.

Format will be pretty much the same as last year under the principle of if it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it. Provisional details are for parking to be on the SW side of Knole, nice and handy for a pub social afterwards. There will be one score course of 20 controls and a whole 60 minutes in which to visit them. I’m sure there will also be an array of amazing prizes on offer for those taking part.

So, keep an eye on the website for full details. Let’s start the new KNC season with a bang!

Alan.

Hi all.

On tuesday the 3rd I begin walking Britain from Land´s End to John O´Groats. I do it for charity as well as for fun.
It will take a bit more than three and a half months.

It will be an amazing experience, although at this very moment, a few hours before leaving, I am a bit scared…

The charity org. of my choice is East Anglia´s Children´s Hospices (EACH) http://www.each.org.uk/. They take cara of very ill children and their families.
If you like, you can donate in http://www.justgiving.com/carlosfl

I have a blog where you can check if I am still alive http://www.carlosgbblog.blogspot.com
My e-mail is hotcarlosfl at hotmail dot com and my mobile number 07952243935, just in case someone want to join me for a bit of the walk. Here is a rough itinerary:

From Land´s End to Paldstow, North Coast of Cornwall.
Eastbound to Bodmin Moor, looking for the beast and also stopping in Jamaica Inn where the best cider in the world is served, if we forget about the Asturian one, of course.
Dartmoor
Straight to Glastonbury… “ups, there is something going on here, what a coincidence!!!, I think I´ll stay for five days…..!!”
Bath, Costwalds hills
North West to the Black Country. Hopefully get a boat and sail the canals for a day or two(“this is not cheating….”, “… because I say it is not cheating, end of the story!”
North West avoiding Manchester through the peak district, Yorkshire Dales, Penines.
Get to Glasgow (unexplored, I mean I haven´t got a clue), Fort William.
From there, and exactly on the 22nd of August, I´ll be meeting Jeremy, Daniel and Co, in Invergarry to walk the Knoydart peninsula in the bank holliday weekend.
Then continue to do either Skye from Mallaig then Lewis and back to main land to finish it, or just go North East all the way to Dunnet´s Head.

I would like to tell all of you that it has been a big pleasure to run with you in the last 3 or 4 years.
But, obviously, the last one has been the best of all. :-)

I hope to see you in September or October

All the best

Carlos

Lee came 13th in Monday’s Sprint competition around the town. The course was quite easy but some competitors were caught out by the proximity of mens’ and womens’ controls.

In the light of controversy at some Sussex Sprint events, it is interesting to note that six competitors were disqualified for jumping a “not to be crossed” wall between controls 12 and 13.

World Deaf Champion Tomas Kuzminskis won. Other British competitors were Ian Ditchfield (MV, 11th) and Peter O’Connell (EBOR, 28th).
